Comments:

While growing up, I was constantly trying to organize things visually. Color and pattern relationships seemed to affect any task or project I was given - from folding laundry to painting. My mother will inform anyone that whenever I cooked dinner, I always had to select and arrange the meal by harmonious or contrasting colors and textures. This fascination has continued into my adulthood. I am still intrigued by the play of color, light, texture, and pattern that I see in the world around me. The way nature can have such intense reds and greens, golds and blues dance together harmoniously holds my attention. I am constantly trying to explore and learn from these relationships in my paintings: Why the shadows in winter are a cooler color than in the summer; Why clouds are never really all white; and why the most complex color relationships occur in nature around us. I have grown up exploring the many designs I see in the landscapes of Utah. The multiple lines, shapes and colors of the trees and land integrate into patterns that I try to examine in work after work.

The series I am currently working on focuses on the dynamic colors of fall and especially the unique patterns of Aspen trees against these colors. These colors and shapes create interesting patterns which I try to express in a way to help others see a little bit of what I find fascinating in the beauty of the land.
